Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM

The Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is a surprising and unique addition to the Canon M system. After a handful of zoom lenses with a variable aperture and a single fixed focal lens, Canon suddenly comes up with a short macro with built-in LED lighting. The lens also has image stabilization. The focal point of 28mm corresponds to almost 45mm on full frame. It is therefore a light wide-angle standard lens and is therefore excellent for street and documentary photography. For a macro, this focal point is no problem when making reproductions, but if you really want to make full use of the macro capabilities of this lens, then you are barely more than an inch away from your subject at the shortest setting distance with the front lens. It is then very difficult to get any light between your subject and the lens. And that is when the built-in LED lighting comes in handy. The LED lighting consists of two strips, left and right of the front lens. They are not rotatable, but they can be switched on separately, and they are dimmable. So you do have some control over the light. Macro lenses perform almost without exception well in the optical department, and the Canon EF-M 28 mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is no exception to that rule.

De Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is een verrassende en bijzondere toevoeging aan het Canon M-systeem. Na een handvol zoomlenzen met variabele diafragmaopening en een enkel vast brandpunt objectief komt Canon ineens een korte macro met ingebouwde LED-verlichting. Het objectief is ook nog eens voorzien van beeldstabilisatie. Het brandpunt van 28mm komt overeen met bijna 45mm op full frame. Het is dus een lciht groothoekige standaardlens en hij is daardoor prima voor straat- en reportagefotografie. Voor een macro is dit brandpunt bij het maken van reproducties is geen probleem, maar wil je echt de macro mogelijkheden van dit objectief volledig benutten, dan zit je op de kortste instelafstand met de frontlens nauwelijks meer dan een centimeter van je onderwerp af. Het is dan heel lastig om nog wat licht tussen je onderwerp en het objectief te krijgen. En dat is het moment dat de ingebouwde LED-verlichting van pas komt. De LED verlichting bestaat uit twee strips, links en rechts van de frontlens. Ze zijn niet roteerbaar, maar ze zijn wel apart van elkaar in te schakelen en ze zijn dimbaar. Dus enige controle over het licht heb je wel. Macro objectieven presteren vrijwel zonder uitzondering goed op optisch gebied en de Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is geen uitzondering op die regel.
