For those who want to photograph birds in the Netherlands, the focal length can never be long enough. Bluethroat, blackcap, blue tit or warbler? It really starts at 500mm. Just as important as the focal length are fast AF and a manageable size of the lens that you have with you. Good telephoto lenses with a long focal length are almost without exception big and heavy. Finally, a zoom lens is an added bonus for nature shots, since you usually do not have the option of moving closer for good composition without chasing off your subject. The Nikon AF-S 200-500mm scores on all these points. Mount this reasonably sized and affordable telephoto lens on a camera with a DX sensor: a D7200/D5500 for high resolution or a D500 for the incredibly good (accurate and fast) AF. If you combine the 200-500mm with a 1.4x converter, you can still take advantage of the AF, although it becomes slower, while you bring the subject even closer.
Voor wie vogels wil fotograferen in Nederland, kan de brandpuntsafstand niet lang genoeg zijn. Blauwborst, zwartkop, pimpelmees of rietzanger? Bij 500mm begint het pas. Net zo belangrijk als de brandpuntsafstand zijn een snelle AF en een hanteerbaar formaat van de lens die je bij je hebt. Want goede telelenzen met een lange brandpuntsafstand zijn vrijwel zonder uitzondering groot en zwaar. Tenslotte is een zoomlens voor natuuropnames een bijkomend voordeel. Want je hebt meestal niet de mogelijkheid om dichterbij te gaan staan voor een mooiere compositie, zonder je onderwerp weg te jagen. Op al deze punten scoort de Nikon AF-S 200-500mm. Koppel deze redelijk goed draagbare en betaalbare telezoom aan een camera met een DX sensor: een D7200/D5500 voor een hoge resolutie of aan een D500 vanwege de ontzettend goede (want nauwkeurig en snelle) AF. Als je de 200-500mm combineert met een 1.4x converter, profiteer je nog steeds van AF, al wordt die wel langzamer, terwijl je het onderwerp nog meer naar je toe haalt.
